Devdaha, east of Butwal, is identified with the capital of the Koliya clan, the family of the Buddha's mother Maya Devi and his wife Yashodhara. Maya Devi was on her way here to give birth when she stopped at Lumbini.
Sites include the Kumarbarti temple, Bhawanipur and the Khayardanda archaeological mounds. Devdaha is part of the Greater Lumbini Buddhist circuit and makes a quiet addition to a Lumbini visit.
What to see and do
Visit the Kumarbarti temple, the old Pakari tree associated with the Buddha's childhood visits, and the excavated mounds of Khayardanda and Bhawanipur. The Devdaha Development Area is gradually adding facilities for pilgrims.
Good to know
Sites are spread out; a car or motorbike makes the visit easier. Butwal has the nearest good hotels.
