A twin-summited sacred mountain seen from Kathmandu, representing Shiva and his consort Gauri.

Gaurishankar (7,134 m) is visible from the Kathmandu Valley on clear days, and for a long time in the 19th century it was confused by Europeans with Everest. Its two summits are identified with Shiva (Shankar) and Gauri, and the Sherpa call it Jomo Tseringma.

It was one of the last major Himalayan peaks to be climbed (1979). The surrounding Gaurishankar Conservation Area protects the Rolwaling valley, Tsho Rolpa and remote villages that see few visitors.

Where to see it

On clear winter days Gaurishankar is visible from Kathmandu's northern and eastern viewpoints, from Nagarkot and Dhulikhel, and from Kalinchowk. The Rolwaling valley trek passes beneath its southern flanks, and the villages of Beding and Na look up at Tseringma's peaks.

Good to know

The Gaurishankar Conservation Area, established in 2010, protects wildlife including red pandas and snow leopards and supports local livelihoods. Trekking permits are required for Rolwaling.
