In Nepali: ह्यात्रुङ झरना · Also known as: Hyatrung Jharana · ह्यात्रुङ झरना

A tall ribbon of water dropping down a forested cliff in Tehrathum, claimed as one of the highest waterfalls in Nepal.

Hyatung (or Hyatrung) Falls tumbles in stages down a cliff in the Phedap area of Tehrathum. Local sources describe it as the tallest waterfall in Nepal, at around 365 m, though no official measurement has been published.

It is at its fullest in and just after the monsoon, when it can be heard long before it is seen. A short trail from the nearest road leads to a viewpoint; local youth groups have been improving facilities for visitors.

What to see and do

From the viewpoint you can see the fall's long drop through the forest, split into several leaps. Local trails lead closer to the base for the adventurous. The surrounding hills of Tehrathum have Limbu villages, cardamom fields and dhaka weavers.

Good to know

Access roads can be muddy and slippery in the monsoon — the season when the fall is most impressive. Go with local directions or a guide, and keep away from wet rocks near the edge.
