Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek
In Nepali: कञ्चनजंघा आधार शिविर पदयात्रा
The Kanchenjunga trek is for walkers who want the high Himalaya without the crowds. From Taplejung the trail climbs through terraced Limbu villages and cardamom groves to Ghunsa, a Sherpa village of wooden houses and prayer flags, and on to Pangpema (about 5,140 m), the north base camp facing the vast north wall.
Many trekkers link the two base camps via the Sele La passes, making a circuit of three weeks or more. Lodges are simple and far apart, and the area is a restricted zone: you need a special permit, at least two trekkers and a licensed guide.
Route at a glance
The northern route usually starts at Taplejung or Sekathum and follows the Tamor and then the Ghunsa Khola upstream: Chirwa, Sekathum, Amjilosa, Gyabla, Ghunsa, Kambachen, Lhonak and finally Pangpema. To make a full circuit, trekkers cross the Sele La and Sinion La passes from Ghunsa to Tseram and walk up to Ramche and Oktang on the south side, then descend through Yamphudin.
What makes it special
This is one of the few classic Himalayan treks where you can walk for days meeting more yaks than tourists. The change of scenery is dramatic — from terraced millet fields to fir forest to glacial moraine — and the Sherpa and Tibetan-influenced culture of Ghunsa contrasts with the Limbu villages lower down.
Good to know
Restricted-area rules apply (permit, licensed guide, two or more trekkers). Nights above 4,000 m are very cold even in the main seasons. Tea-house lodges are now available on most stages, but they are simple, and food choices are limited higher up. Budget three weeks for the circuit, or around two for the north base camp only.
