A stone village at 3,519 m under Annapurna III and Gangapurna, where trekkers rest before the Thorong La.

Manang lies in the upper Marsyangdi valley, in the rain shadow of the Annapurnas, so it is dry and sunny with a landscape of eroded cliffs, pine and barley fields. The Manangi people were historically famous long-distance traders across Asia.

Trekkers spend a day or two here to acclimatise, climbing to Gangapurna lake, the Ice Lake or the Praken Gompa where a lama blesses passers-by. The old monasteries of Braga and Bhraka nearby are worth visiting.

What to see and do

Acclimatisation hikes: the Gangapurna glacier lake just across the river, the Ice Lake (Kicho Tal, about 4,600 m) above Braga, and Praken Gompa for a blessing from the resident lama. Visit Braga monastery, one of the oldest in the region, and the Manang health post's free afternoon talk on altitude sickness during the trekking season.

Good to know

Manang has well-stocked lodges, bakeries and even small cinemas showing mountain films. Spend at least one extra night here before heading higher.
