The hilltop palace of the old Achham kingdom, rebuilt after being burned in the civil war.

Mangalsen, the headquarters of Achham, grew around the palace of the rulers of the former Achham principality, perched on a ridge with views over the Budhiganga valley. The durbar was destroyed in a 2002 attack during the Maoist conflict and has since been restored.

The town is a base for Ramaroshan and the southern route to Khaptad.

What to see and do

Visit the restored durbar and the temples of Mangalsen, walk the ridge-top bazaar, and enjoy views of the surrounding hills. The town is a stepping stone to Ramaroshan and Khaptad.

Good to know

Accommodation is basic. Road travel in Achham is slow; allow extra time.
