In Nepali: सतासी धाम

A shrine of the Rajbanshi community and the old Satasi kingdom in south-east Jhapa, with ponds and ancient trees.

Satasi Dham, in Jhapa's south-east near the Mechi border, is linked with the memory of a local kingdom and is sacred particularly to the Rajbanshi, Koch and other indigenous communities of the eastern Terai. Fairs are held at major festivals.

It is a good place to see the other side of Jhapa: flat paddy fields, bamboo groves, traditional mud-and-thatch houses and communities whose culture is shared with North Bengal across the border.

What to see and do

Visit the shrine and its ponds, and explore the surrounding villages of the Rajbanshi and other Terai communities, with their bamboo houses and fields. Festivals bring traditional music and food.

Good to know

Few outsiders come here; go with a local contact from Bhadrapur or Birtamod. Winter is the most pleasant season.
