Damauli, headquarters of Tanahun, sits where the Madi river joins the Seti Gandaki. By tradition this is the birthplace of Veda Vyasa, compiler of the Vedas and author of the Mahabharata, and a small cave above the confluence is dedicated to him; the municipality is named Vyas after him.
A temple and ghat stand at the river junction, and a fair is held on Vyasa's birthday at Guru Purnima. It is an easy stop on the Prithvi Highway between Kathmandu and Pokhara.
What to see and do
Visit the small cave shrine of Vyasa above the river, the temples at the confluence, and walk the riverside ghats. Damauli is also the gateway to Bandipur and to the Chhimkeshwari hill.
