A week-long walk up a glacier valley close to Kathmandu, to the yak pastures and monastery of Kyanjin Gompa.

The Langtang trek starts at Syabrubesi and follows the Langtang Khola through forest where red pandas and langurs live, up to the Tamang villages of the upper valley and Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m), with its cheese factory and glaciers all around. Day climbs to Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri give huge views of Langtang Lirung.

In 2015 the earthquake triggered a massive avalanche that buried Langtang village and killed hundreds of people. The community has rebuilt, and trekking brings important income. The route can be combined with Gosaikunda and Helambu.

Day by day (typical)

Day 1: drive Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. Day 2: walk to Lama Hotel through forest. Day 3: to Langtang village and Mundu. Day 4: Kyanjin Gompa. Day 5: climb Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri and explore the glaciers. Days 6–7: walk back down to Syabrubesi, then drive to Kathmandu.

What to see and do

At Kyanjin, visit the monastery and the cheese factory, and walk up the valley towards Langshisa Kharka for glacier views. The memorial to the 2015 avalanche victims in Langtang village is a sobering stop. Tamang culture, butter tea and yak pastures make this trek feel remote despite its proximity to the capital.

Good to know

Langtang National Park entry permit is required. The trek can be done independently in the main seasons, though a guide is recommended. It combines with Gosaikunda and Helambu for a longer route.
