Nepalgunj is the largest city of the mid-western Terai and the gateway to the far west: small planes fly from its airport to Simikot, Jumla, Rara, Dolpa and other mountain airstrips. Its bazaars mix Awadhi, Tharu, Pahadi and Muslim communities.
The Bageshwari temple is a Shakti Peetha where, in one tradition, part of Sati's body fell. Just outside the city, Banke National Park and the Rapti river make good nature trips.

Visit the Bageshwari temple and its pond, explore the bustling bazaars around Tribhuvan Chowk, and try local specialities such as kebabs and sweets. Day trips reach Banke National Park and the Bardiya park via Kohalpur.
