This national park protects the watershed that supplies much of Kathmandu's water. Its oak and rhododendron forest is home to leopards, barking deer, and hundreds of bird and butterfly species — all within an hour of the city.
Popular walks include Shivapuri peak (2,732 m) from Budhanilkantha, the nunnery of Nagi Gompa, Baghdwar (source of the Bagmati), and Jamacho stupa on Nagarjun hill to the west. On clear winter mornings the Himalaya stretches along the northern horizon.
What to see and do
Popular walks: from Budhanilkantha up to Shivapuri peak via the Nagi Gompa nunnery (a full day); from Sundarijal past the reservoir and waterfalls towards Chisapani (the start of the Helambu trek); and on Nagarjun, the road or trail up to Jamacho with its stupa and view tower. Birdwatchers can see laughing thrushes, minivets and sunbirds.
Good to know
Park entry fees apply at the gates. Go with a companion or guide on longer, quieter trails. Carry water and snacks. On clear mornings between October and March the Himalayan view from the ridges is superb.
