A sacred confluence on the Narayani at the Indian border, with the forest hermitage of the Ramayana's poet Valmiki.

At Triveni, three rivers — the Narayani (Gandak), Sona and Tamasa — are said to meet, and the site is linked with the legend of the elephant and crocodile (Gajendra Moksha). A great fair is held here at Maghe Sankranti.

A short way into the forest lies the Valmiki Ashram, where the sage Valmiki is said to have composed the Ramayana and sheltered Sita and her twin sons Lava and Kusha. The area borders Valmiki Tiger Reserve in India and Chitwan in Nepal.

What to see and do

Bathe or watch pilgrims bathe at the ghats, visit the temples at the confluence, and walk into the forest to the Valmiki Ashram and its shrine. The area has rich birdlife and the chance of seeing wild animals from the adjoining forests.

Good to know

The Maghe Sankranti fair is very crowded. Do not wander into forest areas without a local guide; wildlife, including tigers, lives nearby.
